This Rees Jones layout was the brainchild of Al Mengert. Al was a two time US Junior Amateur Champion in 1946-47 as well as the Washington and Northwest Amateur Champion in the early 1950’s where his low 60’s rounds made him a legend in the Northwest. He turned professional after serving in the Air Force during the Korean War and went on to a successful career as both a player and club professional. He won the 1960 Arizona Open by 15 strokes, and had the vision to create desert golf experience that challenges all level of players. This course has five sets of tees that allow you to play from 4910 yards all the way back to 6845 yards. It’s a very friendly course for Women and Junior players from the forward tees and a challenge from the tips. The sprinkler heads are marked for yardage and there are 150 yd. stakes to aim at. The front nine is an easy start to the round with the back nine being a bit tougher. There are birdie opportunities on the finishing holes with two par fives before the par four finish. I know a guy who finished 3-3-3 there to make the cut in the 1996 Arizona Amateur! The greens were changed to Tiff Eagle in 2008 to provide great fast surfaces year round. There is a John Jacobs/Shelby Futch Golf Academy on site for group or individual lessons and a Hot Stix fitting center available. The pro shop is almost 2000 sq. feet stocked with the latest golf equipment and clothing by PGA Professional John Jackson, and we are sure that wife Lisa has a lot to do with the ladies clothing lines.
